Feed & Grain

The feed and grain industry stores vast quantities of raw materials in silos — from wheat and barley to soy meal and premixes. Product quality and food safety impose strict requirements on hygiene and cross-contamination. Blockages and dead material in silos are not just a capacity issue, but a direct risk to public health and animal welfare. Blue Power combines industrial cleaning capacity with an understanding of food industry requirements.

• Caking and lump formation — grain and meal absorb moisture and clump in layers along silo walls • Insect and pest infestation in dead material that has remained too long • Mould formation (aflatoxins, ochratoxin) in humid stagnant zones — serious health hazard • Cross-contamination between batches when old material breaks loose unpredictably • Ratholing causing FIFO violations — oldest material does not come out first • Reduced silo capacity forcing expensive interim storage solutions • Bridging over outlets, especially with fine-grained products like meal and premixes
Feed and grain block silos through biological and physical processes: 1. Moisture migration: Temperature differences between grain and silo walls drive moisture towards cooler surfaces. This creates condensation zones where grain bonds to the wall. 2. Biological degradation: When grain moisture exceeds 14%, mould growth accelerates. Mycelium binds particles together forming hard masses. 3. Fine fractions: Meal, dust and premixes have very low flowability. They pack under pressure and can form cement-like blockages. 4. Protein content: Soy meal and other protein-rich raw materials are especially prone to caking, because proteins act as natural binders when moist. 5. Silo size: Large grain silos (30–50 metres tall) generate enormous pressure at the bottom layer. Material compresses and loses flowability.
Blue Power delivers specially tailored solutions for the feed and grain industry: 🔹 Food-grade cleaning: We use methods and materials approved for contact with feed and food products. No chemical residue — only mechanical and pneumatic cleaning. 🔹 Complete emptying and inspection: We fully empty the silo, remove all dead material, inspect for damage and mould attack, and document the condition with photos and reports. 🔹 Disinfection and prevention: After cleaning, we offer disinfection treatment and recommendations for ventilation and temperature monitoring that reduce the risk of new build-up. 🔹 Capacity optimisation: We map lost capacity and calculate the ROI for cleaning — we often see customers recover 20–40% storage capacity. 🔹 Regular maintenance agreements: Feed silos should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year. We offer subscription-based agreements tailored to the operational cycle.
