Personal Protective Equipment for Silo Work

When silo entry is unavoidable, proper PPE is essential for protecting the worker.

Respiratory Protection

Choice of respiratory protection depends on hazard type: particle filter (P3) for dust, combination filter (ABEK-P3) for gases and particles, SCBA for oxygen levels below 19.5%. The mask must be fitted to the user with regular fit testing. When uncertain about the atmosphere, SCBA should always be used.

Fall Protection Equipment

A complete fall arrest harness with chest and back attachments is necessary. Fall arrest lanyard to anchor point with minimum 12 kN strength. Retractable lanyards preferred over static lines. Rescue harness with lifting eyes is essential for emergency rescue without the rescue team needing to enter.

Protective Clothing and Body Protection

Protective clothing includes antistatic clothing for ATEX zones, dust-tight overalls, helmet with chin strap, safety goggles, and gloves. In ATEX zones, everything must be antistatic and approved. Synthetic clothing is not permitted in Zone 20 and 21. Hearing protection is necessary above 80 dB(A).

Communication Equipment

Continuous communication between the worker inside the silo and the safety watch outside is a legal requirement. Radios or wired communication that works with hearing protection is necessary. Emergency signal systems that activate automatically upon loss of consciousness provide extra safety.

Equipment Limitations

PPE is the last line of defense - it protects the worker but does not eliminate the hazard. Equipment requires regular inspection, testing, and maintenance. Harnesses and lanyards have limited lifespans. The user's competence is as important as the equipment's quality.

Better Alternative: Eliminate the Need

The safest PPE is the equipment you don't need to use. Blue Power's mechanical cleaning method eliminates the need for personnel entry and thus also the need for PPE inside the silo. Contact us for a no-obligation assessment.
